The Assistant Head of School External Affairs serves as a key member of the senior leadership team, working closely with the Head of School, Board of Trustees, staff, families, and external constituents to enhance the school’s advancement efforts. This role encompasses leadership responsibilities across development, enrollment management, marketing, and community engagement, ensuring that effective fundraising and institutional advancement initiatives support the school's mission and strategic goals.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as a strategic partner to the Head of School, offering insights and leadership on matters related to advancement and institutional growth.
  • Develop and implement a comprehensive advancement strategy that aligns with the school’s mission and long-term strategic plan.
  • Represent the Head of School when necessary at events, meetings, and on committees to further advancement initiatives.
  • Oversee all aspects of fundraising, including the Annual Fund, capital campaigns, planned giving, and donor stewardship.
  • Cultivate relationships with major donors, alumni, parents, and community stakeholders to support fundraising initiatives.
  • Identify and pursue grant opportunities to enhance school programs and initiatives.
  • Develop and implement donor recognition and stewardship programs to maintain and strengthen relationships with supporters.
  • Collaborate with the admission team to develop strategic enrollment and retention initiatives that support the school’s long-term growth.
  • Partner with marketing and communications staff to craft compelling messaging that effectively tells the school’s story and promotes engagement.
  • Lead initiatives to enhance the school’s visibility and reputation within the local community.

  • Supervise and manage admission and advancement staff, ensuring that fundraising and development initiatives are effectively executed.
  • Maintain accurate donor records and prepare detailed reports for the Head of School and Board of Trustees.
  • Oversee the advancement budget, ensuring resources are allocated strategically to maximize impact.
  • Ensure compliance with best practices and ethical guidelines in fundraising and advancement operations.
  • Other duties as assigned by Head of School.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree required; Master’s degree in a relevant field (education, nonprofit management, business administration, etc.) strongly preferred.
  • Minimum of five years of leadership experience in development, advancement, or school administration.
  • Proven track record of success in fundraising, donor relations, and strategic planning.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to engage effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Experience managing teams and leading collaborative projects.
  • Familiarity with donor management software and fundraising technology.
  • Understanding of independent school culture and governance preferred.

Additional Information: This is a full-time, 12-month administrative position requiring occasional travel and some evening and weekend commitments for school events and donor engagement. The Assistant Head of School for External Affairs will play a vital role in shaping the school’s future through dynamic leadership in philanthropy and institutional growth.
